Hempstead Housing Developments

Hempstead Housing Authority (HHA) operates 144 units of public housing. Public housing units are built or acquired using federal public housing funds. The program generally serves households with incomes up to 80% of median income. Tenants pay 30% of their income for rent. HHA receives an annual operating subsidy from the federal government. HHA’s Public Housing Program is evaluated annually by HUD using the Public Housing Assessment System (PHAS). For general information on the Public Housing Program, you may also visit HUD's website.

Criteria Used To Select Applicants

HHA screens applicants to determine that they meet the qualifications for the Public Housing Program by confirming information provided on the application form, including checking credit records, rental references, and court records. Residents pay 30% of their household income for rent. Applicants must also qualify by income, based on household size.

Hempstead Housing Developments:

General MacArthur Senior Village, located at 260 Clinton Street, Hempstead, NY, is a midrise building with 143 units of housing for elderly (62 years and older) and disabled residents without children. The apartments include studio and one-bedroom units and a community room. The Town of Hempstead provides a senior enrichment.
Totten Towers, located at 20 Totten Street, Hempstead, NY, is a midrise building with 75 units of housing for the elderly (62 years and older) and disabled residents, which includes studios, one-bedroom apartments, and a community room.
Clinton Court, located at 114 and 134 Yale Street, has 32 townhouse family homes, including one- to four-bedroom units. Gladys Gardens, located 20 and 40 Gladys Avenue, Hempstead, NY, has 30 townhouse family homes with one- to three-bedroom units.
