Waiting List Information and Frequently Asked Questions
All our waiting lists are currently closed. The expected time frame for selection of the elderly/disabled waiting list is two to eight years. The expected time frame for selection of the Section 8 (Voucher Choice program) is five to eight years. If you have a pending application, you must update your contact information and family composition when it changes by mail or online. You can submit, view, and update your application at https://hempsteadny.housingmanager.com.
Selection will be conducted through a lottery. An applicant's position on the waiting list will be determined through a computerized lottery which is a random selection process. It does not matter what day or time you apply during the application period. Priority will be given to applicants who live or work in the Village of Hempstead and veterans.
Applicants who are selected on the waiting list will be notified by the United States Postal Service (regular mail). Applications of participants that are not selected by lottery will be destroyed.
Do not call the housing authority on the status of an application.

What Is the Average Waiting Period?
The average waiting period varies depending on funding availability and the number of applicants on the waiting list. The average time period can vary anywhere from two to seven years or longer. Please note that placement on the list does not guarantee that a family will be assisted.
What Is Section 8?
The Section 8 program provides assistance for low-income families in the private rental market through the Housing Assistance Payments Program (HAP).
Rental voucher holders select a unit (housing) from the private rental market. Rental assistance makes market rate housing affordable. Program participants normally pay no more than 30% of the monthly adjusted income toward rent and utilities. The Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) subsidizes the balance of the rent to the property owner. They must comply with the terms and conditions of the lease.
